The Perfect Barolo for Fall Meals!

Thu, Nov 02, 23

After that three day blast of winter less than a week ago, I'm sure we're all settling back into our Fall groove. My absolute favorite wines during this amazing time of year are the Piedmontese reds, and the Barolos in particular. 50 years after Mauro Molino graduated from the Alba Winemaking School, his eldest son Matteo, and his daughter Martina continue the family tradition of making wines in this most magical of Italian wine producing denominations.

2018 Mauro Molino Barolo is showing really well right now, and this will be a Barolo with a wide drinking window. Aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose water, fennel pollen and a gravelly minerality. The mouthfeel is classic Nebbiolo with raspberries, cherries, rose petals, and black tea flavors that are laser-like, but flesh out nicely after at least one hour in a decanter. This is a stunning bottle to pour with beef stew, mushroom risotto or even a steak and potatoes drizzled with blood orange olive oil and fresh thyme. Kudos to Martina, Matteo and their Papa Mauro.
